Appropriate Expectations for Tissue Healing

Tissue healing times are extremely important to know and understand. Then you will be able to set expectations in order to return to your previous activity level. This information is not intended to discourage you, rather set a guideline to proper rehabilitation. it is important to be aware that healing times can differ slightly between injuries and individuals.

Healing Times:

Exercise muscle soreness:

  • 0-3 days

    Muscle strain:

  • grade one: 0-2 wks

  • grade two: 4 days-2 wks

  • grade three: 3 wks-3 months

    Ligament sprain:

  • grade one: 0-3 days

  • grade two: 3 wks-6 months

  • grade three: 5 wks-1 year tendon

  • Tendinitis:

  • 3 wks-7 wks

    Tendinosis:

  • 3 months-6 months

    Laceration:

  • 5 wks-6 months

    Articular cartilage repair: 2 months-2 years

    Ligament graft:

  • 2 months-2 years
